His first brush with roleplaying came at nineteen, when a borrowed character sheet followed him onto a fishing boat and remained more legible than the weather report. In his fifties, after years checking net winches and fuel lines at sea, he became impossible to talk to about the hobby when a table settled a rules dispute by custom and he began asking which sentence had authorized that outcome.
