Gideon O'Callaghan first met blacksmithing after years spent restraining terriers for dental radiographs, when a quench turned a bright blade black and he decided the cooling was the only honest part of the work. In his fifties, he would replace every casual quench with a measured act of accountability, but nobody lets him near the tank after he began asking what temperature the maker's convictions had reached.
