Iona MacRann has never forgiven museum conservation for teaching the public that a white glove is a moral credential, a lesson she spent four decades correcting around objects that needed clean, dry hands and ordinary sense. Well past retirement, she still interrupts any discussion of handling with a demand to identify the fiber, residue, and institutional anxiety involved before the glove is allowed to become evidence.
