Man Explains Blockchain To Date For Forty Minutes, Receives No Second Date

A first date at an Italian restaurant in downtown Chicago lasted approximately ninety minutes, forty of which were occupied by one participant's unsolicited explanation of blockchain technology, distributed ledger systems, and the philosophical implications of trustless consensus. The date, arranged through a conventional dating application, began promisingly with mutual interest in hiking and a shared appreciation for dogs. It pivoted at the 12-minute mark when Jessica Thornton, 32, mentioned that she had recently started using a new banking app. "He said 'oh, traditional finance' in a tone that I can only describe as pitying," Thornton recalled. "And then he reached under the table and pulled out a small whiteboard." The whiteboard, a 12-by-16-inch portable dry-erase board, had been transported to the restaurant in a tote bag that also contained three different colored markers and a copy of the Bitcoin white paper. Her date, Marcus Decentralized (legal name Marcus Davidson, 35, who changed his last name on social media in 2021), drew what he described as "a simple diagram" of how blocks are chained together using cryptographic hashes. The diagram eventually covered both sides of the whiteboard and a portion of the paper tablecloth. "He asked me if I understood the Byzantine Generals Problem," Thornton said. "I told him I didn't. He said 'perfect' and drew three generals. The waiter came by twice and Marcus waved him away because he hadn't gotten to Merkle trees yet." Thornton excused herself to the restroom at minute 38 and used the time to text her roommate the phrase "come get me or I will learn what a nonce is." Marcus, reached for comment, said the date went "really well" and that he planned to text Thornton a link to a three-hour YouTube explainer on Ethereum 2.0 as a follow-up. Thornton has since blocked his number and the YouTube channel.
