"Spore Print?" Comment Becomes Only Meaningful Interaction in Three-Day Identification Thread

A three-day identification thread in the regional board's photo-aid queue closed Thursday after 74 replies, of which participants later described exactly one as useful, a review of the exchange has found.

The thread opened at 8:41 p.m. Tuesday with three photographs of a bracket fungus on a standing dead hardwood, the note "north face, about three feet up, bark already shed," and the question "is this what I think it is?" The log for the first four hours reads as follows:

8:52 p.m., "Following!"
9:03 p.m., a species guess, hedged with an emoji.
9:19 p.m., a request for the county, which the opening post had already supplied.
9:44 p.m., a photograph of an unrelated fungus and an apology for the wrong thread.
11:06 p.m., an inquiry into edibility, answered by the moderator with the board's standing notice that food use requires confirmed identification by a qualified local expert and is not discussed otherwise.

At 9:14 p.m. Wednesday, a member who joined the society in 1997 and replies to roughly one thread in nine posted two words: "Spore print?"

Nothing further happened for eleven hours. Then the original poster returned with a print left on dark and light paper, a note on the color it held in daylight, and a fourth photograph taken from beneath the cap. What followed is what the board's chair later called "the usual."

Three members who had contributed only "following" and a guess now supplied full descriptions: cap surface, pore texture, the stain where the specimen had been handled, the host tree's condition. Two of them disputed the host tree. A rival foraging group mirrored the thread into its own server and returned with a second wave of opinions the original poster declined to read. Vera Pike was asked, as she always is, to rule on whether "Spore print?" constituted gatekeeping. She said a question is a question, and both sides held her responsible for the outcome.

By the closing count, the two-word reply had drawn more reactions than the other 73 combined. Asked later which reply had changed anything, the original poster named it, then added that the rest had been "sort of loud."

The board's photo-aid FAQ was amended Friday to list a single question as a complete first response. The veteran, reached Tuesday, said he writes two words because the photographs rarely support more. "Somebody has to ask the fungus something," he said. "The rest of the thread is asking each other."

Thread closed 11:58 p.m. Thursday. Status: resolved. The determination is not being reported here, and not out of secrecy; three days of 74 replies produced one line worth logging, and it was not a species name.
