Cemetery Introduces Dynamic Pricing, Weekend Plots Now Cost 40% More

Oakridge Memorial Gardens has become the first cemetery in the country to implement dynamic pricing for burial plots, with rates fluctuating based on location desirability, seasonal demand, and what the cemetery's pricing algorithm calls 'ambient funeral density.' Under the new system, plots near the ornamental lake cost 40 percent more on weekends, corner plots carry a 'premium positioning surcharge,' and the entire east section — which catches the morning sun — has been reclassified as 'Sunrise Premium' with rates adjusted accordingly. 'We looked at how hotels, airlines, and ride-sharing companies optimize revenue,' said cemetery CFO Margaret Ledger. 'Death is the one industry that hasn't modernized its pricing model. We saw an opportunity.' The pricing algorithm, developed by a consultant who previously worked for a major airline, considers sixteen variables including time of year, day of week, proximity to holidays, local mortality trends, and what the model somewhat indelicately calls 'inventory velocity.' 'January through March is our peak season,' Ledger explained. 'Rates reflect demand. If you're flexible on timing, we offer significant off-peak discounts in August.'
