Grief Counselor Upsells Bereaved Family to Premium Mourning Package

A funeral home in suburban Chicago is facing scrutiny after a grief counselor reportedly upsold a bereaved family from the standard bereavement consultation to the $4,800 Platinum Grief Experience during what the family described as 'the worst moment of our lives.' The Platinum package, offered by Serenity Meadows Funeral Home and Wellness Center, includes six one-on-one counseling sessions, a 'personal sorrow concierge' available by text around the clock, a curated Spotify playlist titled 'Your Journey Through Loss,' a commemorative sadness journal bound in Italian leather, and a branded weighted blanket. 'She caught us at a vulnerable moment,' said Dennis Rutherford, 47, whose mother had passed away three hours before the consultation. 'One minute we were discussing flower arrangements, and the next she was explaining the difference between Standard Grief and Platinum Grief. I didn't even know grief had tiers.' Grief counselor Amanda Treadwell defended the upsell. 'Grief is not one-size-fits-all,' she said from behind her desk, which features a prominently displayed rate card. 'Some people process loss with a conversation and a cup of tea. Other people need the weighted blanket. It's not my place to judge which level of grief someone requires.' The Standard package, priced at $600, includes two counseling sessions and a pamphlet. The mid-tier Gold package ($2,200) adds a scented candle and a framed inspirational quote. The Platinum tier adds the concierge, playlist, journal, and blanket. A rumored Diamond tier reportedly exists but is offered 'by invitation only.' The funeral home's Yelp page shows mixed reviews. 'Three stars,' wrote one recent client. 'The counseling was helpful but I did not expect a loyalty rewards program for repeat bereavements.'
