Reiki Practitioner's Hands So Hot They Now Require OSHA Heat Stress Guidelines

Reiki master Ember Lighttouch has been informed by an occupational health inspector that her hands, which reportedly reach temperatures of 47 degrees Celsius during healing sessions, now fall under OSHA's Heat Stress Prevention Guidelines and require 'a formal risk assessment before contact with clients.' The inspection was triggered after a client reported 'a sensation of intense warmth during the heart chakra portion' that an urgent care physician subsequently identified as a first-degree burn in the shape of a palm. 'My hands channel universal life force energy,' Lighttouch said, holding her palms approximately eight inches from a reporter's notebook, which began to curl at the edges. 'The warmth is ki — vital energy — flowing through me and into the client's biofield. It is not, as the inspector suggested, a workplace thermal hazard.' OSHA inspector Frank DeMatteo disagreed. 'Forty-seven degrees Celsius is the temperature of a medium-hot cup of coffee,' DeMatteo said, reviewing his thermal imaging scan. 'I've inspected bakeries, foundries, and glass-blowing studios. None of the workers in those facilities generated this kind of heat from their bare hands. I don't know what she's channeling, but it requires PPE.' Lighttouch has been issued a compliance notice requiring her to provide heat-resistant draping for clients, maintain a water station within arm's reach of the treatment table, and post a visible sign reading 'CAUTION: ELEVATED HAND TEMPERATURE — HEALING IN PROGRESS.' She has complied under protest, noting that the sign 'disrupts the healing ambiance' and that the oven mitts recommended by DeMatteo 'block the flow of universal energy and also look ridiculous.' Lighttouch is appealing the citation on the grounds that 'ki is not subject to federal workplace regulation.' DeMatteo says he is 'looking into that.'
