Marionette Maintenance Backlog Reaches Critical Levels as Puppets Report 'Existential Tangling'

The National Puppet Preservation Society has declared a 'maintenance emergency' after a survey of puppet collections across 34 countries revealed that more than 4,000 marionettes are suffering from what conservators call 'advanced string entropy' — a condition in which the control strings become so tangled, degraded, or misaligned that the puppet 'can no longer perform even the most basic functions of puppet existence.' 'These marionettes cannot stand,' said NPPS director Helga Crossbar, presenting photographs of slumped, tangled figures in storage cabinets. 'They cannot walk. They cannot raise their arms. Several have become so entangled with adjacent marionettes that we cannot determine where one puppet ends and another begins. This is not storage. This is a mass grave of articulation.' The crisis is attributed to decades of deferred maintenance as funding for puppet conservation has declined. The average marionette requires restringing every five to seven years. The survey found puppets that have not been restrung in 40 years, their original cotton strings replaced by nothing because 'no one got around to it.' 'A marionette without functioning strings is not a marionette,' said conservator Philippe Knot. 'It is a doll that has given up. The strings are not accessories. They are the marionette's nervous system. Without them, the puppet exists in a state I can only describe as existential paralysis.' The NPPS has launched a fundraising campaign with the slogan 'No Puppet Left Behind,' which has raised $47,000 of a $2 million goal. The campaign features a video of a tangled marionette attempting to wave, which it cannot do, set to melancholy string music. 'The string music was perhaps too on the nose,' admitted Crossbar. 'But the point stands. These puppets need our help. They cannot help themselves. That is literally the defining characteristic of a marionette.'
