Puppet Hospital Reports Surge in 'Performance Injuries' as Puppet Stunts Grow More Dangerous

The Prague Institute of Puppet Medicine, the world's only accredited facility for puppet repair and conservation, has reported a 60 percent increase in what director Dr. Karel Hinge calls 'performance-related injuries' as puppet shows worldwide adopt increasingly dangerous stunt choreography. The most common injuries, according to the Institute's annual report, include limb detachment (147 cases), string tangling resulting in 'mobility loss' (89 cases), paint chipping 'severe enough to alter the puppet's emotional expression' (67 cases), and a category the report labels 'complete structural failure,' which Dr. Hinge translates as 'the puppet came apart.' 'We had a hand puppet come in last week that had been used in a scene involving a blender,' Dr. Hinge said. 'A blender. The puppet was being operated inside an actual blender. For comedy. The puppet's felt has been shredded beyond recognition. This is not comedy. This is puppet violence.' The Institute has called for an industry-wide standard on puppet safety, including maximum drop heights, prohibited interaction with kitchen appliances, and mandatory 'stunt doubles' for high-risk scenes. 'We use stunt doubles in film for human actors,' Dr. Hinge said. 'Why not for puppets? A stunt puppet could absorb the damage while the hero puppet remains pristine. This is not a radical idea. This is basic occupational safety, adapted for beings made of wood and cloth.'
