Puppetry MFA Program Graduates Entire Class of 12, All Now Working in Marketing
The prestigious three-year program, which costs $87,000 in tuition, has a 100 percent employment rate — just not in puppetry.

The University of Hartford's prestigious MFA in Puppetry Arts — one of only three accredited graduate puppetry programs in the United States — held its spring commencement ceremony Saturday, conferring degrees upon twelve graduates, all of whom have secured full-time employment in fields that have absolutely nothing to do with puppetry.
'I'm a content strategist at a SaaS company,' said graduate Emily Armature, who specialized in Czech-style rod puppetry. 'My thesis was on the semiotics of the marionette in postcolonial performance. I now write email marketing copy. The skills are surprisingly transferable if you define "skills" broadly enough.'
The class of 2026's career destinations include digital marketing (four graduates), corporate communications (three), UX design (two), real estate (one), a brewery taproom (one), and one graduate who describes his position as 'freelance puppet content creator,' which his classmates note is 'technically puppetry but also technically YouTube.'
'Our graduates bring a unique perspective to every field they enter,' said department chair Professor Hans Kontrol. 'The ability to manipulate objects to create the illusion of life is applicable far beyond the puppet stage. In marketing, for example, you are essentially making a product seem alive and relatable. It's the same skill set.'
Graduate Marcus Stringman, who is now a real estate agent in suburban Connecticut, agreed. 'Puppetry taught me presence, timing, and how to make something inanimate seem appealing,' he said. 'I now sell houses. The vacant ones are basically puppets with mortgages.'
The program's promotional materials highlight a '100 percent employment rate within six months of graduation,' which is technically accurate. The materials do not specify the field of employment.
'We produce versatile artists,' Professor Kontrol said firmly. 'The fact that the market does not currently support twelve new professional puppeteers annually is a reflection of society, not of our program.'
