Google Maps Labels New Housing Development 'Soulless Cul-de-Sac' Due to Metadata Error
The developer is demanding a correction; residents say the label is 'harsh but not entirely inaccurate.'

A new housing development in suburban Dallas appeared on Google Maps for approximately 72 hours under the label 'Soulless Cul-de-Sac' after what the company described as 'a metadata ingestion error' that pulled the label from an urban planning blog rather than the developer's official filing.
The development, officially named Harmony Estates at Whispering Creek, consists of 44 identical beige homes arranged in a loop pattern. Its Google Maps listing displayed the unauthorized label from Friday evening through Monday morning, during which time the listing received 847 user reviews, all five stars.
'Finally, an honest name for one of these places,' read the top review. Another stated: 'Visited Soulless Cul-de-Sac. Can confirm. Still gave five stars for accuracy.'
Developer Prestige Homes International demanded an immediate correction and is exploring legal options. 'We spent $40,000 on naming consultants,' said vice president Brad Elevation. 'Harmony Estates at Whispering Creek was tested across twelve focus groups. It tested very well. There is no whispering creek but that is beside the point.'
Google issued a statement attributing the error to an automated data pipeline that 'occasionally ingests descriptive text from third-party sources.' The company confirmed the label has been corrected.
However, residents of the development have started an informal petition to keep the name. 'Harmony Estates sounds like a medication side effect,' said homeowner Jennifer Stucco. 'Soulless Cul-de-Sac has character. Ironic character, but character.'
As of press time, the Google Maps entry has been corrected to Harmony Estates at Whispering Creek, but the autocomplete suggestion for the address still reads 'Soulless.'
